  42. Gorin's Microbook provides a convenient way to provide user
  43. documentation, or indeed any other form of textual
  44. information, using an easy to use point and click interface.
  45.  
  46. The Microbook control system supports up to 50 separate
  47. books in any one directory. With each set of books you
  48. distribute, you must include a copy of the MICROBK.EXE file.
  49.  
  50. When run, the Microbook will display a list of the books in
  51. the current directory, from which the user can select. To
  52. bypass this dialogue and load a particular book from the
  53. command line, specify the extension of the book to view on
  54. the command line, for example MICROBK MBK will view this
  55. file. Alternatively, where only one book is present in a
  56. directory, Microbook will automatically bypass the
  57. dialogue box and load it in.

  59. ~NOTE: You must be a registered user of Microbook to
  60. ~distribute files you create with Microbook - registered
  61. ~copies display YOUR name on the screen when you start
  62. ~the program, Shareware ones say that the program may
  63. ~only be used to view books created by Neil Gorin.

  66. Shareware copy, and as such you should not distribute your
  67. Microbooks with it.

  74. In order to create books for use with Microbook, you will
  75. require a text editor or word processor capable of producing
  76. plain ASCII files. If you use a word processor, ensure that
  77. you either press ENTER at the end of each line, or the ASCII
  78. file is saved with line breaks.
  79.  
  80. Microbook requires that all books are stored within the same
  81. directory as the MICROBK.EXE file, and that all books have
  82. the name BOOK.

  84. The extension of the file is totally up to you, valid
  85. examples being BOOK.1 BOOK.2 BOOK.MAN BOOK.XY. Do not use
  86. the extension BAK as Microbook automatically excludes books
  87. with this extension.

  90. ~The Microbook "book" format

  92. For a simple example book, refer to BOOK.SPL, supplied.

  94. The format of the book file is as follows:
  95.  
  96. Title - The first line of the file contains the title of the
  97. book, and will be seen in the book list. 20 chars max.
  98.  
  99. "@chapter name" - the name of a chapter, to be displayed in
  100. the chapter index to the right of the display. If you wish
  101. to provide a chapter break, signified by a row of boxes,
  102. simply place no text after the @ symbol. Exclude the quotes
  103. shown in this example - they are there to prevent a new
  104. chapter "chapter name" being created.

  106. Body of chapter - up to 40 lines of up to 60 characters
  107. each. If the first character of a line is the ~ (tilde)
  108. character, the entire line will be highlighted.

  110. Up to 100 chapters may be included, using the same format as
  111. above. Ensure that the last line of your file contains the
  112. phrase $$END$$ starting at the first character position.

  118. All text in file will be trimmed to the following lengths:
  119.  
  120. ~Title: 20 characters
  121.  
  122. ~Individual lines: 60 characters (including tilde character)
  123.  
  124. Due to the use of a proportional font, the Microbook may
  125. sometimes display text which exceeds the space provided on
  126. screen. If this occurs, simply edit the offending line.
  127. This occasionally happens if a number of "wide" characters
  128. such as capital M, N, W and O are used on a line.

  132. If any of your chapters exceed 40 lines, a dialogue box will
  133. inform you. Similarly, if you supply more than 100 chapters,
  134. you will again be warned.

  136. ~The Microbook index
  137.  
  138. The index, displayed on starting Microbook, interrogates all
  139. files beginning BOOK in the current directory, and displays
  140. the title of those books in the index list. These books are
  141. displayed in alphabetical order. To load a book, simply
  142. click on the book name.

  145. @What is Shareware?
  146. ~THE SHAREWARE CONCEPT
  147.  
  148. Shareware is THE best way to try new software, but only if
  149. you're honest and register if you like the results.
  150.  
  151. Think of it like this: If you buy a commercial package, you
  152. have relatively little idea of how the software will
  153. perform, until you get it home to your PC. If you then
  154. decide you don't like the software or that it doesn't do
  155. what you want, tough - there's nothing you can do. With
  156. Shareware distribution, you get to try a complete, fully
  157. working, version of the program for a couple of weeks. If
  158. you then find the program to be of no use to you, simply
  159. scrub the disk and forget about it - you've only lost the
  160. cost of the disk - in most cases about £3.
  161.  
  162. If, however, you find that you like the software and that it
  163. works for you, you should register. Registration provides
  164. you with a diskette containing the latest version of the
  165. software, and often some other perks. If you don't register
  166. your shareware, it's not only equivalent to using a pirated
  167. copy of a commercial application but may discourage the
  168. author from developing the software further.

  170. Compare your use of this Shareware version with a Test Drive
  171. in a new car. If you decided that you liked the car, you
  172. would have to pay the price on the wind screen, for which you
  173. would get your very own with the latest specification and a
  174. few extras, such as servicing and anti rust thrown in.
  175. Shareware is the same, you test drive the software, then if
  176. you like it you MUST pay, for which you receive the items
  177. detailed above. You would never dream of keeping a car that
  178. you hadn't paid for, would you?

  187. For your registration fee of £24.95 sterling, you will
  188. receive the following:

  190.          1: The latest copy of Gorin's Microbook
  191.          branded with your name, company name or
  192.          chosen identity.
  193.  
  194.          2: The right to distribute that copy of
  195.          the Microbook program file for free,
  196.          provided you include at least one of your
  197.          own Microbooks with the program.
  198.  
  199.          3: The latest issue of the NGS Newsletter.

  201. You will also be placed on the mailing list to receive
  202. information of major upgrades and new releases. New releases
  203. and upgrades are always available to existing registered
  204. users at a significant discount.

  206. If you need any technical support with the product, you can
  207. write, telephone or email as much as you need.

  209. You have a 14 day period to evaluate Microbook, to
  210. see if it suits your needs. After this time, you are no
  211. longer licensed to use the software unless you pay the
  212. registration fee and receive a registered copy.

  215. REGISTER.DOC, if at all possible. Use REGISTER.TXT if your
  216. printer cannot print line drawing characters.

  223. 1: Gorin's Microbook is licensed AS-IS. No warranties or
  224. guarantees of any kind are given with this program.

  226. 2: This software is not guaranteed to prevent or detect
  227. damage to any hardware devices or software installed upon
  228. your machine.

  230. 3: Under NO circumstances will Neil Gorin be liable for ANY
  231. claims for Lost Profits or for any form of damages resulting
  232. from the direct or indirect use of this product.

  234. 4: In NO circumstances shall Neil Gorin's Liability exceed
  235. the license fee paid for the software.

  237. 5: This software is marketed as Shareware. Anybody
  238. continuing to use this software after the initial 14 day
  239. evaluation period must pay the registration fee of £24.95 to
  240. the author.

  243. program file which have been branded by NGS with the users
  244. identity - i.e. only distribute a registered version.
